Canada’s chemistry and plastics sectors depend on efficient, reliable transportation systems to access global markets. While trade agreements and market dynamics continue to evolve, the ability to move products—from production facilities to end customers—remains a critical determinant of competitiveness. Rail constraints, port capacity limitations, and broader supply chain disruptions are increasingly shaping investment decisions and export potential. At the same time, ambitions to expand and diversify trade will only be realized if transportation networks can support increased volumes and reliability. Strengthening the connection between trade and transportation is essential to ensuring Canada remains a competitive global supplier.

Canada and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland remain an attractive region for petrochemical investment due to feedstock advantage and decarbonization infrastructure. The session addresses the most attractive opportunities for chemical investment within the region as well as limits to profitable growth. Systemic constraints to the energy value chain build-out will be explored. Investment considerations include chemicals but must be associated with the larger volumes in NG, Oil/condensates and other NGLS. System design is critical to realization of the region’s potential.

Speakers:

A timely discussion on the early rollout of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), exploring progress to date, emerging challenges, and lessons from leading jurisdictions such as British Columbia and Ontario. The session will examine how EPR is influencing behaviours across the value chain—from residential and commercial sectors to producers, collectors, waste managers, and recyclers—and what early signals are emerging around investment in circular economy systems. It will also consider how broader market dynamics, including commodity price pressures, may be shaping implementation and outcomes.
